This page is part of my desire to recognise the role of women in Victoria’s ‘frontier society’ period. Few women owned land or had their names recorded on documents, so they left little record of their own lives. Despite this they had an important place in developing towns. One of the roles they had was in supporting and assisting other women who were at their most vulnerable, during childbirth. They had skills, although largely unrecognised by the male-only medical profession, which were handed down from their own mothers and coloured by their own experiences of childbirth. Some women acted as midwives only within their own family but others hired themselves out to women who knew and trusted them. This listing then is an indication, not only of the birthing activities of women, but also of the intimate social networks that women moved in.
